Linda Nielsen Bio

Dr. Linda Nielsen, Professor of Women’s Studies and Adolescent Psychology at Wake Forest University, is a nationally renowned expert on father-daughter relationships. Her most recent book, Embracing Your Father:  How to Build the Relationship You Always Wanted with Your Dad ( McGraw Hill, 2004) has been widely acclaimed as a groundbreaking, no-nonsense guidebook. She also wrote How to Motivate Adolescents (Prentice Hall) and a best selling college textbook, Adolescence: A Contemporary View (Harcourt Brace). Her articles have appeared in many scholarly journals, including The Harvard Educational Review, Journal of Divorce & Remarriage and Marriage & Family Review.  

A member of Phi Beta Kappa and the recipient of the outstanding graduate's award from the College of Education at the University of Tennessee in 1969, she taught high school for several years before earning a Master's Degree in Counseling and a Doctorate in Educational and Adolescent Psychology. She joined the faculty of Wake Forest University in 1974, won the Outstanding Author’s Award in 1980 from the U.S. Center for Women Scholars, and was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the American Association of University Women.  

Dr. Nielsen’s work has been featured nationwide in a PBS documentary, “Fathers and Daughters: Journeys of the Heart”, on NPR with Frank Stasio, and in publications such as The Christian Science Monitor, National PTA Magazine, Military Spouses, Seventeen. She has also been interviewed on such radio programs as His Side with Glenn Sacks and the Divorced Dads Network. National organizations featuring her work on their web sites and publications include: National Center for Fathering, National Fatherhood Initiative, American Coalition for Fathers & Children, Dads & Daughters, Responsible Divorce Network, and Father Magazine. Her monthly columns have appeared in the Stepfamily Association of America, National Men’s Resource Center, and Parenting Bookmark

Since 1990 she has been teaching the only college course in the country devoted exclusively to father-daughter relationships. Her guests have included syndicated columnist Kathleen Parker and author/activist Rebecca Walker. Through her writing and teaching, she continues to help fathers and daughters strengthen or reestablish their relationships especially divorced fathers and their daughters.
