Shared Parenting Beat Continues…
December 20, 2011 – Our thanks to Jeremy Walters for sending over this link to the lead story on the 10 p.m. news this past Monday evening in Charlotte, NC. In a newsletter several months ago we brought you the story of Jeremy Walters successful efforts to have a shared parenting bill introduced in the South Carolina legislature. Since that time an ACFC affiliate called the South Carolina Coalition for Parents and Children (SCC4PC) has been formed and efforts to move the bill are underway. The SCC4PC website will be online soon.
Our thanks to the Fox news affiliate in Charlotte, NC for carrying this story out of SC. Many of those working in Charlotte reside just across the border in South Carolina, the issue affects people in both states. Hopefully these ‘cross border’ broadcasts will move North Carolina legislators to act as well. If you are in North Carolina and want to become involved please contact our ACFC affiliate there KN2P.org – (Kids Need Two Parents).
Two meetings have already been held with interested stakeholders at the state capitol in Columbia. Legislators and Shared Parenting proponents sat down with representatives of the bar association, state domestic violence coalitions, church leaders and members of the business community to work toward building a consensus on moving this legislation forward. The above photo shows several participants from the meeting in November.
You can read a copy of the bill here. The bill calls for a rebuttable presumption of equal physical custody in the event parents receive joint legal custody of the children. This would be a positive step forward. There is still a long way to go before the bill becomes law. The working group will meet again after the Holidays.
Stay tuned for further shared parenting developments from around the nation.
